About the show
Disney's classic Beauty and the Beast has been adapted to a short musical format to accomodate a middle school level performance. The condensed show's runtime is about 90 minutes.
Heineman Middle School used the Performing Arts Center at Huntely High School to stage their production of Beauty and the Beast Jr. With a cast of over 140 students, the scenic design needed to be open enough to accommodate a large number of performers, but alo adapted such that it could cover all the major different locations in the show. This entire set was constructed on platforms. All scenic elements were multi-sided and spun around to reveal the three major locations in the show; The Village, The Castle, and the Tavern. Unique scneic elements include a sixteen foot circular, false deck clock that represented the curse of The Beast's rose, and an eighteen foot tall central spire tower that acted as an overlook during castle scences.
I was repsonsible for all technical elements of this production including set design and construction, technical direction, lighting and sound design, and livestream video recording.
